Chihuahuas can have either long or short hair and can be either one solid color or a mixture of colors and markings. This breed is often thought to be cute because of small stature, but this is also what can make the animal difficult to care for. With proper care, chihuahuas can live upwards of 15 years.

Instructions

1- Use a leash when taking your chihuahua out for a walk. While chihuahuas can be well behaved, they have a tendency to be fearless around larger animals, often resulting in injury. Keeping your pet on a leash can prevent injury from other animals as well as traffic.

2- Feed your chihuahua a nutritious diet. If this small dog is allowed to become overweight they it can lead to joint pain and injury, which could lead to a shorter life. Your veterinarian can recommend a dog food that would be appropriate.

3- Check blankets and other soft surfaces before sitting. Chihuahuas tend to burrow into blankets and clothing when they take a nap.

4- Provide steps for your chihuahua to get onto beds and other furniture. Since they are so small, it can be dangerous for chihuahuas to jump onto tall furniture such as beds and couches. Small steps made for dogs can be ordered from numerous dog supply companies and make it easier for small pets to get onto the furniture without hurting themselves.

5- Keep toxins put away. Chihuahuas are naturally curious and will lick or eat anything that they find. The same applies to rolls of toilet paper, newspapers and children's toys.

6- Perform general grooming activities on a regular basis. These activities include brushing the animal's coat and cutting nails. You can either groom your chihuahua yourself or have a groomer do it. Chihuahuas, including long-haired chihuahuas, do not need to have their hair cut.
