The Chihuahua is a tiny dog, averaging no more than 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) in height and 2 to 12 pounds (1 to6 kg) in weight. It is in fact the smallest dog breed in the world, and it is no wonder than famous people around the globe tend to choose this dog as a local luggage companion. They are easy to carry, look cute, and don't need much exercise either, not even daily walks are necessary. Yet it is a breed that is very lively and entertaining. It is also usually very happy and affectionate, and craves lots and lots of attention. The Chihuahua will follow you wherever you travel, and loves to just sit in your lap while you watch TV, Read, Sleep, Etcetera. Chihuahuas can have very different personalities however, and while some of them may be kind and cuddly, others might not be, so keep this in mind. Chihuahuas are good with older more gentle children and usually with strangers as well, though this may differ with their personalities.
The chi Chihuahua has a relatively big head, outgoing eyes, an often grumpy expression and very large ears. Their fur coat is long and smooth, with colours ranging between red, cream, chocolate, blue, grey, white, fawn and black
The Chihuahuas history is a mystery. What is known is that it comes from Mexico, but the rest of the story is all folklore and speculation. The most usual theory is that the Chihuahua is a descendant of the Techichi breed, one the Toltecs (a certain tribe) developed from Chinese dog breeds and that the Spanish conquistadors later brought back to America. The Techichi can be traced as far back as the ninth century. The Chihuahua was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904.
The lifespan of a Chihuahua lies between 8 too 22 years, which is a lot compared to other dog breeds. Some common health issues include luxating patella, entropion, dental problem, heart problems, trachea problems, low blood sugars, sensitivity to chemicals and medications, and open fontanel. They can also have genetic anomalies such as epilepsy and seizure disorders, and are sometimes also born with the at times very painful condition hydrocephalus. This can be noticed if the puppy has an abnormally large head during its first several months. They also have fragile bones, and their protruding eyes can easily be damaged. In general smaller dog breeds tend to have more health issues than the bigger ones, maybe due to past unconventional breeding, this dog breed being no exception.
