Chihuahua dogs are named after a state in Mexico where they are said to have originated from. It is often believed that these dogs have been bred from a variety of fox rather than wolf as in the case of most other dog breeds. With their triangular pointy ears, small size and alert, quick minds, they do resemble foxes much more than they resemble wolves.
These dogs were apparently bred for the Aztec or Toltec royalty and have since become popular among common people beyond Mexico as well. It is difficult to determine precisely how a dog breed comes about but that the Chihuahua comes from South America is commonly accepted as fact except by some theorists who trace the breed's origin to Europe. Apparently the Toltec people did have small dogs called Techichis but not much precise information is easily available on whether the modern Chihuahua is the Techichi or a mix.
According to the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the international federation of kennel clubs, the country where a dog breed originated has the right to determine the characteristics of a 'typical' specimen of that breed.
Mexico at various times, has called for the typical Chihuahua to have a flat tail, short legs and be about 1 pound in weight, but these things too keep changing, particularly since it isn't Mexico alone that determines the typical Chihuahuas characteristics but also popular television advertisements and big brands that use Chihuahuas as mascots and the type of Chihuahua they use quickly becomes the accepted representative of the breed among people.
