Chihuahua Dogs - Small Dog Syndrome

You've heard the saying, "treat everyone the same?" This should also hold true for dogs regardless of whether they are small or large in size. Believe it or not - dogs are often stereotyped in similar manners as people. Our perceptions about the behavior of small chihuahua dogs versus large ones might lead us to false conclusions about whether it's friendly. Some negative and false perceptions of small pets are they bark more frequently than larger dogs and that they're meaner due to their lack of size. On the flip side, large dog owners hear about how their pets look like vicious killers that are ready to pounce on their prey, shredding it to pieces. Perceptions about small and large dogs are just that..perceptions. The truth of the matter is the behavior of dogs - from their perspective - has absolutely nothing to do with their size, as you will soon understand.

Believe it or not, the behavior of dogs is relatively consistent. In comparison, it is really not much different than people. We have our good and bad days. Our moods are up one moment and can go down the next. The reason for this is all humans come from the same species. Small and large dogs also come from the same species. In actuality, they come from a subspecies of the wolf, known more commonly as canine. The point is all dogs regardless of size do what is natural and instinctive, much like humans.

Civilized humans are expected to conduct themselves in a specific way or manner that conforms to how society functions. For the most part, it is understood by all people. The same holds true for all dogs based upon their own behavior. But as humans, we often perceive or categorize that behavior based upon their size. For example, if a large 100-pound Boxer jumps on his or her owner, it is considered to be unacceptable. However if a four-pound pet Chihuahua follows through on the same action, it is perceived by some to be, "cute," making it okay.

The truth is the behavior of the two dogs is exactly the same. The intent of the 100-pound Boxer was to dominate his owner. The same holds true for the four-pound Chihuahua. It is the same behavior with the same intent. Yet, the perception of the large dog is that it is a killer while the perception of the smaller animal is that it is being playful.

The bottom line is that small, medium-sized, or large dogs should ever be allowed to get away with this type of behavior. Dogs don't think about their size when they are reacting in the moment. In fact, size is not a factor in their minds. It is not uncommon to see a small dog snip at a larger one. As you can see, it doesn't matter whether a small or large dog commits the same wrongdoing. Both should be disciplined without excuse.

Chihuahua dogs will quickly become a member of your family. Make it the best experience by having the proper equipment and to train chihuahua properly. Check out http://www.trainchihuahuadogs.com

Chihuahua Dogs and Kids - How to Make a Happy Home

Chihuahuas have become extremely popular as the small dog breed to own. Over 20% of all small dogs owned are the Chihuahua breed. According to our research, Chihuahuas are fully 22% of all dogs owned. In thinking about this number and recognizing my own sons are just starting out in their lives, there are likely a large number of those Chihuahuas living in families with small children. One thing I keep reading is that Chihuahuas are not the dog of choice when children are part of the family. So, this article discusses how to make Chihuahua Dogs and children live well in one happy home.

In short, if we truly treat the Chihuahua dog as a child, we are likely to have success as one happy family. For example, human babies are more fragile than human adults. So, too, the Chihuahua dog is more fragile than larger or big dogs. You would not let anyone hold your baby that might drop it; rather you would sit the person (child) down, place the baby in the lap of the child and be there to monitor so that the child does not drop, squeeze or otherwise harm the baby. The same procedure is true for socializing a child and a Chihuahua. In fact you might choose to put pillows and blankets around the child while they are holding the Chi - this all provides and shows security to the Chi and it shows to a child how careful they must be. You might even reference to the child how sometimes they are not allowed in certain places because they must first learn to be very careful and tell them that the same is true of the Chihuahua - they must first learn how to behave with the Chi then they will be able to play with him.

Here are some other helpful hints:

Just as a child has their own room, a Chihuahua or other small dog breed should have their own sleeping and feeding place. By doing this the child learns to respect the "personal space" of the Chihuahua

It is known that to make eye contact with a child on his level makes an adult seem friendlier to the child. A Chihuahua may actually see a smaller human as equivalent to another dog - Chihuahua dogs are very territorial. Rather, the trusted owner should pick up the Chi and introduce the family pet while they feel safe and secure. Let the Chi come to you.

Just as a child is told to ask before speaking, so too should a Chihuahua be trained by his trusted owner not to lick (at least not excessively) or bite - simply achieved by holding the Chi close and covering his mouth

Just as a child has play time, so too should a Chihuahua have cues that it is "play time" and other cues that tell him it is not time to play

Just as a child should be held and cuddled, so too, should a Chihuahua or any other family pet

The difference is the baby will grow to an adult, but the Chi will always stay small. You would not want to be holding any dog and accidentally drop it, but a Chihuahua or other small breed dog is likely to suffer more hurt than a larger dog when suffering a fall. Essentially, trust needs to be built between the Chihuahua and those with whom it lives and a family can do that by introducing the Chi and the child slowly and always with security in mind for both child and Chihuahua.

Discover the Many Types of Chihuahua Dogs

If you love Chihuahuas, of course you'll want to know more about them. These fascinating animals originated in Chihuahua, Mexico and were objects of worship to the ancient Aztecs. The word "chihuahua" means an arid, sandy place and there are actually several types of Chihuahua dogs.

The Chihuahua in part due to their portable size have become quite popular lately and their popularity continues to grow. Although the Chihuahua is known as the smallest of the dog breeds, but what many people don't realize is there are different Chihuahua types. This little powerhouse has a huge heart so don't be fooled by its tiny size!

Chihuahuas come in all sorts of colors, including chocolate, cream, silver, blue, black and fawn. Their heads can be shaped like deer or they can have apple heads. Applehead Chihuahuas have a very round head, a small snout, and close-set eyes. The ones with deer heads have an elongated nose similar to Doberman Pinschers.

The American Kennel Club recognizes long-haired and short-haired types of Chihuahuas. The smooth coat of the short-haired type sheds very little. Their tail is sometimes curved. Long-haired Chihuahuas can have flat or curly hair, and it is quite soft, with extra fluff around the tail and ears.

The terms "teacup" and "mini" when applied to Chihuahuas are merely commercial designations used to try to elicit high prices from the buyer. All Chihuahuas are genetically a toy breed, and breeding to produce the tiniest dog possible is a long-established custom. Don't be fooled into paying more for a Chihuahua merely because of its description.

It's easy to understand why Chihuahuas are the 10th most popular dog in the United States, since they're such an intelligent dog, and fiercely protective of their owners. Standard Chihuahuas today weight six pounds or less, and are six to nine inches tall. The darling tan dog that starred in the Taco Bell commercial is representative of the most popular type of Chihuahua.

If you live in an apartment, you couldn't do better than to get one of these tiny dogs. They are wonderful companions and live a long life, in many cases getting to be 16 years or older. Shorthaired companions may need a little extra warmth, sometimes burrowing under covers to maintain their body heat while asleep. My friend has a Chihuahua that will growl whenever anyone has the audacity to uncover her.

It is believed that Chihuahuas may be the oldest breed of dog to exist in the American continents. A slighter larger breed of Chihuahua existed in the 2nd century BC, and was known as a symbol of the upper class. It was probably bred with miniature Chinese dogs which the Spanish introduced to the New World.

Whichever type of Chihuahua dog you find, you owe it to yourself to think about taking one of these small devoted dogs home with you; you will find them to be entertaining and companionable pets for many years to come. In addition, once you buy one Chihuahua, you will want to get another!

Basic Chihuahua Dog Training For You To Learn

Basic Chihuahua dog training is a required and crucial aspect of a chi's growth. Several dog owners believe that since they're so little, these kinds of dogs do not have to be trained in fundamental instructions.

This can be a misunderstanding - all dogs, irrespective of their size have to be trained obedience and must know their position in the pack. An untrained dog will grow up to become an aggressive and possessive dog that won't pay attention and will assume he's superior than you.

What basic Chihuahua dog training should you give to your dog? Listed here are the three fundamentals he needs:

Housebreaking - Don't let yourself be lazy and train your pet to go on dog pads or perhaps in a litter box. He must eliminate outside the house. Start this training starting from the time you brought him home.

Socialization - Make certain he's introduced on walks to people and other dogs. Chihuahua's are normally keen to be suspicious of other people and generally build a strong relationship with their owner only. You can help prevent possessiveness by simply introducing him to sociable conditions every day.

Basic commands - He should be aware of the fundamentals such as stay, sit, down and come. These commands are for his safety and for your own control.

With regards to basic Chihuahua dog training, you have to be mild when talking and in the techniques you use. Don't use choke collars on the Chihuahua as you can harm their necks. Preferably, whenever a training collar is essential, make use of a harness or flat buckle collar, which can help to safeguard his trachea.

Your small pet may attempt to escape you during the training and may not pay attention to you or may disregard you. This can be annoying but you must show persistence and show your pet that in terms of stubbornness, he will not defeat you. You have to be steady and optimistic.

Gradually, when he is aware he can't get his way, he'll pay attention and respect you. Keep in mind, regardless of how annoyed you may become with your pet, never ever hit, push or toss him. These small fellas have little bones and joints and can easily be damaged.

So as you start your basic Chihuahua dog training, be sure you apply these tips. Make a strong Chihuahua training work and he will grow into a wonderful family member.

Chihuahua Dogs Information

Do you love small dogs? Then you might consider adopting a Chihuahua. Yet you have to know more about this breed before you finally decide to get one for yourself. Caring for dogs is more than just providing some food and toys, you need to make sure you adopt one that will be a good companion and suit your lifestyle. Here is some info to help you become more familiar with Chihuahua dogs.

A Bit of an Introduction to Chihuahua Dogs

Known to be the smallest breed, the Chihuahua is named in honor of a Mexican region. They are said to be the descendants of the Techichi, a larger breed which was revered by the royalties of the Aztec. It is said that Spanish traders were responsible for bringing the Chihuahua to Spain as they traded with the Chinese people being the latter who got them to Mexico.

The Chihuahua dogs are popular for their exceptional attributes along with their loyalty to their masters. They come in two kinds-the long coat and the smooth coat. The long-coated dogs have a longer and softer coat that can either be slightly curly or flat with an undercoat. The smooth-coated chihuahuas have a short coat. They differ in heights and commonly range between six up to ten inches tall. Their weight can be between 5 pounds and ten pounds. They also have a variety of colors-black, white, gray, spotted, or tri-colors.

The dogs' bone structure is fine yet it is a very muscular dog. They are fond of focusing their affection on only one person and this can be remedied by developing their socialization skills. They prefer having other Chihuahuas around and can easily get hurt when they play with bigger dogs. They are a fragile animal so having them around small children is not recommended. They are also sensitive to the cold weather and can live up to approximately 16 years.

Chihuahua Health Problems

Like any other dog breed, the Chihuahua has it's share of genetic diseases. They can suffer from slipped stifles or knee injury as pressed on by the weakness of the joints, eye problems, fractures, heart disease, gum and tooth problems. They have a soft spot on the head called a molera and a blow in it can cause the dogs' death.

Chihuahua dogs are perhaps the most beloved of the toy breeds. They are often seen tucked under the arms of their owners. They can be carried during outings. These dogs are also fond of playing with anything in sight. Therefore, you must be careful with your mail, tissue paper, and other documents. All in all, Chihuahuas are a wonderful pet and companion!

Why Do People Breed Chihuahua Dogs

Many people breed Chihuahua dogs because the dog intrigues them. After all, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed in America and their large eyes, pointy ears and smooth, short glossy coat are adorable. People that breed them focus greatly on producing the breed standard. A loyal Chihuahua with an infectious personality, playful ferocity and an undeniable devotion that can be read in their eyes as they look at you. Someone that decides to breed them understands that they are producing a brave dog that pays little attention to its own lack of size. They can sometimes be the tiniest guard dog you've ever seen, becoming very protective of the people that care for them and wary of strangers. If you breed them, it should be understood that you are dealing with an often high strung dog, however, with proper training this dog will be a loveable devoted companion.

Consider whether or not you are patient and committed enough to breed. The breeds require a lot of veterinarian care. They are prone to eye infections, dental problems, diabetes and a sharp decrease in blood sugar, sometimes resulting in a coma, if left unattended for an extended period of time. They are actually born without a fully developed skull so great care must be taken during their first six months until the skull forms completely.

Once you do breed Chihuahuas it's unlikely that you'll go back to another dog. This breed is adored for their size and temperament. This dog even likes to travel, making it a popular breed choice for many Hollywood celebrities over the years, from Marilyn Monroe to Paris Hilton to Sharon Osborne. Marilyn Monroe's dog became one of the most photographed dogs in history and the breed's popularity has continued thanks to movies like Legally Blonde and television shows like The Osbornes. This has only gone on to further people's interest to breed them.

If you do breed these lovable dogs, their soft fur and coat needs bathed and brushed with regularity. This dog is primarily a lap dog. They become very attached to their master and will constantly show their appreciation by licking your face. The dog's small size does require some careful attention as they are easy to harm or injure. You should also never leave this dog alone because interactions with larger dogs could be very dangerous since the Chihuahua doesn't back down.

If you have a Chihuahua at home, then chances are that you also have at least one outfit for him or her. But you should have more; a lot more. From Hawaii shirts to the Private Eye trench coats, they look great in almost anything.

Gourmet Dog Bakery Makes Treats in Shape of the Chihuahua Dog Breed

The Chihuahua Dog Breed

About The Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a popular favorite of the toy dog group among dog enthusiasts. This spicy little character of a dog is extremely devoted and loyal to its owner. Although reserved with strangers and a little aggressive towards other dogs, the Chihuahua can get along great with other indoor pets that you may have.

Not all Chihuahuas have the same bold temperament. Some are very intense and will have an attitude as if they can take on the world, others may be extremely shy and timid. Either way, all Chihuahuas are very protective of their owners and the rest of the family.

Upkeep And Maintenance

The Chihuahua is a very excitable dog that needs a bit of daily exercise. But the good news is that these little guys can get all of the vigorous physical activity they need from running room to room in a house or a small apartment. But do not neglect outdoor walks and play time. The Chihuahua loves to roam outside and explore.

In terms of living arrangements, the Chihuahua is an indoor dog and should not be kept outside. There is nothing wrong with having him explore the yard a couple of hours each day, but this should only be temporary. Chihuahuas absolutely hate cold temperatures and will run to seek out warmth and coziness.

Grooming is a minor concern if you're the proud owner of a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas come in two types; short-haired and long-haired. Short-haired Chihuahuas need very little brushing, perhaps once every week or so. Long-haired Chihuahuas will need a brushing twice weekly.

Health Information

The Chihuahua has a longer lifespan than most dog breeds, living up to 20 years in some cases, with approximately 16 to 17 years being the norm for a healthy dog. Veterinarians suggest that owners of this dog breed get specific health tests for cardiac issues and knee problems.

Fortunately, there are no major health issues that Chihuahua dog breed owners need to worry about. However, minor concerns do exist but they are very rare, including: hypoglycemia, pulmonic stenosis, patellar luxation, and hydrocephalus. And one last common trait that many Chihuahuas display is called molera, which is a soft spot in the top of the skull that results from an incomplete fontanel closure.

Care For Chihuahua Dogs - Are You Ready For the Challenge

Care for Chihuahua dogs is something any responsible adult can do. But please prepare to deal with your little pet even before your pup comes home. Your pet is counting on you to do what it takes to provide a safe and happy home. And you can enjoy your pet most if your dog is healthy and happy. What's the best way to start?

1. Feed for health.

The small size of any Chihuahua makes food regulation a key to care for Chihuahua dogs. Teacup Chihuahuas especially are prone to overeat which leads to hypoglycemia and diabetes with the accompanying misery and suffering. Carefully regulate your dog's feed intake. Select a high quality puppy chow for a good start. Feed at certain times of the day and take up uneaten food.

2. Bathe.

Keep your puppy clean with monthly baths. Especially be careful with teacup Chihuahuas, since they are prone to ear problems.

3. Chihuahua Clothing.

Clothes for your puppy aren't just about cute and fashion. The Chihuahua has a thin hair coat, even long hair Chihuahuas. The dogs are not cold weather pets. Make sure your puppy has enough protection in cold weather. Also since the dogs are so light weight, they chill easily and can quickly become sick from chilling.

4. House breaking a Chihuahua.

As soon as your puppy is capable, start house training. Routine and close observation are the keys to success. Take your puppy to the place you want to encourage elimination at the first signs he needs to go. This will certainly be shortly after meal time and after sleeping at night or after naps. If you'll watch closely for just a few days, you should have success. Chihuahuas are harder to train than many breeds, but patience will usually lead to success.

5. Socialization.

Chihuahuas are easily frightened simply because they are so small. Would you be easily scared if you weighed six pounds? If you can in a very comforting way introduce your pet to new experiences, you can quickly have a more secure and less neurotic puppy. Show the pup that there is no need for fear and that you are in control and will protect your pet.

A Chihuahua dog is a great pet for many people. The breed does have some serious care requirements partly just because of the small size of the dogs. Meet the challenge of care for Chihuahuas and you can have a long-lived happy pet that you'll enjoy very much.

Controlling Your Chihuahua Dogs Chewing and Nipping Behavior

We love our large-eyed Chihuahua dogs because of their devotion and personality. But at times, these small creatures are acting out in bad ways with annoying habits.

To them, these habits are just normal dog activities, contrary to our standards of how they should behave. But since they dwell in the human world, they must learn to behave in such a way that is acceptable and conforms to human lifestyle and to keep the household a safe and peaceful place.

It is every owner's job to make that happen. It is every owner's responsibility to train it's Chihuahua to stop the unpleasant habits such as the ones discussed below:

Nipping: Chihuahua dogs tend to use their mouths during playtime, especially when they get excited. Nipping, despite of how harmless it may seem, is considered a habit that needs to be stopped right away. It is important to let your dog understand that even in play, his teeth should not touch human skin. It is important to stop this behavior as early as possible to prevent your dog from biting someone in the future.

Once your puppy starts to nip, turn his biting habit into focus on his toys instead of your hands. Provide him with toys that is acceptable and he find inviting like chewy, rubber toys, especially those that come with treats inside. Soft, colorful plush toys will also top his interest.

Start training your Chihuahua by the time that he's still a puppy. As young as 8 weeks, puppies can learn and understand that nipping is not allowed, provided they are taught properly. Teach your dog the fact that nipping results in an unpleasant consequences. Once your puppy starts to bite during play, look your puppy into the eye, say 'ouch' and ignore him. If he still starts to bite again, go to a different room and close the door. But avoid leaving him longer than one minute.

Doing this will make him realize that biting hard turns off any attention and social interaction with you. He will eventually learn to control the pressure of his nipping until he completely learns to stop the habit.

Chewing: There is nothing as frustrating as seeing your adorable Chihuahua dog chew your brand new shoes into pieces. Puppies normally chew to ease their aching gums, especially those that go through their teething stage. Stopping your puppy from soothing his pain won't do him no good, all you have to do is redirect his chewing to his toys instead of your shoes, clothes and other items.

It helps if you'll provide plenty of toys for him to chew on. Having these toys around him all the time will get him used to chewing on them. Just place these items in a confined area so that he doesn't focus his attention on other stuff around the house. Correct him at once if you see him chewing something he's not supposed to. Just say 'no chew' and quickly replace the item with his chew toy. And don't forget to reward him with praise when he starts to chew his toy.

They have a well rounded head and a short pointed muzzle. However, these have a soft spot on top of their skull, which has usually closed by adulthood. This breed has beautiful round eyes large in appearance and set well apart. With erect ears, that are large in look. Their tail curls over the back or to the side, this is long and is sickle shaped. The coat comes in both short coats; wavy or flat coat and long coat. All colours are acceptable in this breed. This includes splashed and solid. A few examples of colour are red, cream, blue, black, chocolate, and black and tan, and merle, though this is not recognised by all show standards. This dog can live up to 17 years but between 10 and 17 years is more likely.

History: The Chihuahua breed comes from South America and is native to Mexico; this is how it gets its name from the state of Chihuahua. This is the oldest breed of dog on the American continent. Here we see the smallest breed of dog in the world. This dog was thought to be sacred to the Pre- Columbian Indians. There is debate about the facts of these dogs history and could, in fact, go back to Malta in the Mediterranean, but this is seen through art work rather than a fact. There is also an idea that this dog came from China some 200 years ago. DNA suggests that it is of Old World origin, this form of analysis only checks on the mothers' side so the fathers' side is not clear or known. We know as a fact this dog has a long history in Mexico. With links to the Toltec breed, which are a slightly bigger dog and whose history goes back to 2nd century B.C.

Temperament: The Chihuahua dog is very territorial and can be very protective. With a temperament that can be easily provoked. This dog, though small in size needs good and strong leadership from the human, this dog is a pack dog and needs you to be the pack leader. This is often forgotten due to their small size and that is why a cloud of misinformation follows this breed. While they are protective and territorial this does not have to mean badly managed. Often it is us humans that change the rules, and we then get the bad behaviour. If this dog was bigger we would treat them as a dog and so have fewer problems. The answer is, they are a dog and need to be treated like a dog. The AKC describes this breed as "A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact with Terrier-like qualities of temperament".

About Chihuahua Dogs

Chihuahua Dogs Are Not For Everyone

In what seems like a very tiny dog, a personality the size of a Great Dane emerges. For some Chihuahua lovers it's just another Chi, and others are just learning about this little entertainer. Whether you have had your Chihuahua for several years or you have just taken your very first Chi home, they will be full of surprises that will keep you amused as long as they live. Since Chihuahuas are known to be the longest living dog, he/she will be amusing you for many years to come. There life expectancy is 15 years and they sometimes live into their early twenties.

However, Chihuahuas are not a good breed of choice for everyone. While there are always exceptions, Chihuahua dogs are typically possessive and protective. They tend to be a one person dog. Chihuahuas are not usually patient around children who don't understand just how fragile they are. Yes, even though they are confident, courageous, fearless, and tough, they are also prone to injuries due to their size. The Chihuahua can be seriously injured or even killed if accidentally stepped on or sat on.

Chihuahuas are dogs that clan. They recognize and accept their own breed but don't like other breeds of dogs. Chis have been know to attack other much larger dogs It is your responsibility, as an owner, to keep this from happening. A friend of mine lost her dog when another much larger dog attacked him for no apparent reason. Her dog was on a leash walking from her apartment to her car when this took place. She was unaware of the other dog being nearby. We all know our Chihuahuas are much like our children so keep a protective eye on him/her and be aware of what is around you if your Chi is not in your arms or a carrier.

A Brief History of the Chihuahua Dog

Chihuahua dogs are named after a state in Mexico where they are said to have originated from. It is often believed that these dogs have been bred from a variety of fox rather than wolf as in the case of most other dog breeds. With their triangular pointy ears, small size and alert, quick minds, they do resemble foxes much more than they resemble wolves.

These dogs were apparently bred for the Aztec or Toltec royalty and have since become popular among common people beyond Mexico as well. It is difficult to determine precisely how a dog breed comes about but that the Chihuahua comes from South America is commonly accepted as fact except by some theorists who trace the breed's origin to Europe. Apparently the Toltec people did have small dogs called Techichis but not much precise information is easily available on whether the modern Chihuahua is the Techichi or a mix.

According to the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the international federation of kennel clubs, the country where a dog breed originated has the right to determine the characteristics of a 'typical' specimen of that breed.

Mexico at various times, has called for the typical Chihuahua to have a flat tail, short legs and be about 1 pound in weight, but these things too keep changing, particularly since it isn't Mexico alone that determines the typical Chihuahuas characteristics but also popular television advertisements and big brands that use Chihuahuas as mascots and the type of Chihuahua they use quickly becomes the accepted representative of the breed among people.

Chihuahua - Dog Breed Info

Group: Toy

Weight: 6 Lbs.

Height: 6-9 Inches

Overview

The precise nature of where the Chihuahua is not entirely sure, and there are many speculations of possible ways they came about. The earliest specimens of Chihuahua were found during the time of the Aztecs, in Chihuahua, Mexico. In 1923, the Chihuahua Club of America was structured - and they were also in charge of writing the standard, which has not been comprehensively changed since then. In 1952, the Club decided to split them into two varieties, with the varieties being depending on the coat.

Temperament

Chihuahuas are energetic, pleasant and intelligent dogs that are also very loyal to their owners. They are very fond of giving affection, but also demand it in return. These dogs have a very imaginative and inquisitive nature, and this enables them to produce ways to get your attention. This breed will do best in a household with older children as they can get injured by younger children. The Chihuahua is appreciated for its loyalty and courage, but they can often become full of themselves and will challenge much larger dogs. These dogs are very wary of strangers, and will always keep an eye on you. The Chihuahua is very alert, vigilant and bold.

Care

The Chihuahuas have smooth short-haired coats that should be brushed gently on an occasional basis. Their coats can also be wiped over with a damp cloth. The long coats should however be brushed on a daily basis with a soft hair brush. Both the long and short haired types of these dogs should be bathed once a month. Great care should be taken to make sure no water gets into the ears of the Chihuahuas. They nails of this breed should be trimmed, and their ears also checked out on a regular basis.

Training

Although these dogs are very trainable, they do however struggle with housebreaking. Seeing that they are so small, many owners will try to train them to go in a litter box. Correct housetraining should however be done outside. But if owners want to use a litter box, constant praise is a must. It is vital for these dogs to be socialised from early onwards, and they should be exposed to many different places and people.

Health problems

Some of the common health problems that are seen in Chihuahuas are patellar luxation, mitral valve heart disease, eye problems, undescended testes, epilepsy, jawbone disorders, rheumatism fractures and dental problems. The Chihuahua is the only dog that is not born with a completely developed skull. They are usually finally formed after 3 to 4 months of age. The Chihuahuas will also need help during whelping, as the puppies have very large heads. This breed usually has a c-section, instead of a natural birth.

Chihuahua Dog Breed Health Issues and Suggested Living Conditions

Health issues: The Chihuahua can get a long list of problems due to their protruding eyes, and it is best to check this. Rheumatism and slipped stifle, colds and gum problems can accrue. In puppyhood care needs to be taken as they can get fractures. In some the skull does not close properly and this can cause problems. The breed also can suffer hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar, which is dangerous for the young puppy.

Living conditions: The Chihuahua is a good dog for apartment life. This dog loves warm weather and dislikes the cold. Just to note this is only a small dog physically, and while it is small it will still need space, even if in an apartment. These dogs are not recommended for children as the child may be inclined to treat this dog as not a dog, and so get problems. This dog is loyal, and does not get along with all other dogs but likes the company of other Chihuahuas. This breed loves attention, and are eager to please.

Do not allow this breed to get small dog syndrome, as this allows negative problems for your dog. This breed can be hard to potty train but with firm and consistent rules the dog gets there in the end. Small, this breed maybe but walks are still needed, not just for the exercise but also offering mental stimulation daily. By walk, it is meant as a walk not a carry. This doesn't have to be a vast distances but variety allows interest for your dog.

Chihuahua - Dog Breeds

The Chihuahua is a tiny dog, averaging no more than 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) in height and 2 to 12 pounds (1 to6 kg) in weight. It is in fact the smallest dog breed in the world, and it is no wonder than famous people around the globe tend to choose this dog as a local luggage companion. They are easy to carry, look cute, and don't need much exercise either, not even daily walks are necessary. Yet it is a breed that is very lively and entertaining. It is also usually very happy and affectionate, and craves lots and lots of attention. The Chihuahua will follow you wherever you travel, and loves to just sit in your lap while you watch TV, Read, Sleep, Etcetera. Chihuahuas can have very different personalities however, and while some of them may be kind and cuddly, others might not be, so keep this in mind. Chihuahuas are good with older more gentle children and usually with strangers as well, though this may differ with their personalities.

The chi Chihuahua has a relatively big head, outgoing eyes, an often grumpy expression and very large ears. Their fur coat is long and smooth, with colours ranging between red, cream, chocolate, blue, grey, white, fawn and black

The Chihuahuas history is a mystery. What is known is that it comes from Mexico, but the rest of the story is all folklore and speculation. The most usual theory is that the Chihuahua is a descendant of the Techichi breed, one the Toltecs (a certain tribe) developed from Chinese dog breeds and that the Spanish conquistadors later brought back to America. The Techichi can be traced as far back as the ninth century. The Chihuahua was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904.

The lifespan of a Chihuahua lies between 8 too 22 years, which is a lot compared to other dog breeds. Some common health issues include luxating patella, entropion, dental problem, heart problems, trachea problems, low blood sugars, sensitivity to chemicals and medications, and open fontanel. They can also have genetic anomalies such as epilepsy and seizure disorders, and are sometimes also born with the at times very painful condition hydrocephalus. This can be noticed if the puppy has an abnormally large head during its first several months. They also have fragile bones, and their protruding eyes can easily be damaged. In general smaller dog breeds tend to have more health issues than the bigger ones, maybe due to past unconventional breeding, this dog breed being no exception.

Chihuahua Dogs-Ferocious, Smart And Lovable

Chihuahua dogs trace their ancestors to the Aztec civilizations in Central America and Mexico.

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world. It is named after the Chihuahua State in Mexico.

Current historical thought says the Chihuahua, like the horse, was brought to Mexico by settlers from Spain. They may have come through trade routes from China. Other theories claim the Chihuahua came from Egypt. So, the origination is kept secret for lack of documentation.

Appearance

One of the first aspect of the Chihuahua dog that you see is its very large eyes and large, erect ears. There are two varieties recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club): the long-coat and the smooth coat. The breed standards include the weight of the dog but not the height which usually runs from six to ten inches. AKC show Chihuahuas cannot weigh more than six pounds (2.7 kg), though ideally the judges will be looking for a dog between 3-6 pounds. The American Kennel Club registered the first Chihuahua 1904.

Pet chihuahua standards vary greatly. I live with my two dear chihuahuas, Tiki and Butch. Tiki weighs about 6 pounds but Butch's fighting weight is about 12 pounds. Pictures of both are above. Both are pure bred. Butch's lineage is very strong evidenced by his strutting walk and markings.

Chihuahuas come in a large variety of colors. Some are solid black or white while others have chocolate, silver, merle and other color tones.

Temperament

The Chihuahua does not recognize its own size. It can be a ferocious opponent and it has been known to scare many burglars, postmen, other large dogs and just about anyone walking down your road. The Chihuahua is known as one of the "yappiest" breeds. It's bark can be both aggravating and life saving.

The Chihuahua's small size makes it an ideal dog for people who live in apartments. They are not particularly well-suited for small children due to their temperament and their tendency to bite when frightened. A Chihuahua will often focus its attention on one person and it will become very jealous of other humans who are friends of its master.

Selecting a Chihuahua to live with you is an important step and should not be taken lightly. Do you want an adult or a puppy? Do you want need top lineage or are your more interested in a friendly pet?

The size of the Chihuahua makes it a perfect apartment companion. Of course you want to be sure you've made the right preparations for a New Chihuahua.

Important Considerations to consider before you bring home your chihuahua puppy:

Training

Feeding

Health

Dental Care

Choosing A Responsible Breeder

Vaccinations

Supplies

Once your Chihuahua settles in at your home you will be very happy to have him or her as your friend and companion for life.
